Selling your WPB condo?
Free Market Valuation →The Breakers Palm Beach: A Local's Guide to Getting In
The Breakers is one of the great historic hotels in America — and if you own a condo in downtown WPB, it's ten minutes away. Most people who live here have never been inside. Here's how to change that.
There are people who have lived in West Palm Beach for a decade and never set foot inside The Breakers. That's a real loss — not because it's a luxury hotel, but because it's a genuine piece of American history that happens to be ten minutes from every downtown WPB condo. Henry Flagler built the original structure in 1896 as part of his plan to make Palm Beach the winter destination for the American elite. The current building, completed in 1926, is Italian Renaissance architecture done at a scale that still stops people mid-sentence when they walk in.
You don't need to be a guest to experience it. You just need to know the right doors.
December: The Christmas Decorations
Every December, The Breakers transforms into what many consider one of the most elaborately decorated properties in the world during the holidays. The lobby, the corridors, the grounds — every inch is done at a level that makes most hotel holiday decorations look like an afterthought. Tens of thousands of lights, custom installations, themed trees throughout the building. People drive from across South Florida specifically to walk through it.
For downtown WPB condo residents, this is a ten-minute Uber. Go on a weekday evening in early December before the crowds peak, walk through the lobby slowly, and have a drink at one of the bars. It costs nothing to look, and what you're looking at is extraordinary.
The Beach Club
The Breakers beach club sits directly on the Atlantic, and non-guests can access it through a day pass. The setup — private beach, pool, full service — is exactly what you'd expect from a Forbes Five-Star property. For residents who want an ocean beach experience without the public parking situation at Singer Island or Palm Beach, this is the alternative.
The History and Architecture
The Breakers has burned down twice and been rebuilt both times. The current building took 2,500 workers eleven months to complete. The ceiling frescoes in the Circle dining room were painted by 75 artists brought over from Italy. The property sits on 140 acres of oceanfront land in Palm Beach — the kind of acreage that doesn't exist anywhere in South Florida anymore.
Walking through the main entrance and into the lobby is a legitimate architectural experience. It's the kind of building that makes you understand why Palm Beach became Palm Beach.
How to Actually Go
The easiest entry points for non-guests: breakfast or brunch at one of the restaurants, a drink at the Seafood Bar or the bar off the main lobby, or simply walking through during the December holiday season. The staff at The Breakers is notably gracious — this is not a place that treats non-guests as unwelcome. If you own a home ten minutes away and you haven't been yet, fix that this season.
